Principal Update
Sibylla Kiddle School Families,
Have you ever watched an Olympic sport where the winner is determined by a judged score? Figure skating, freestyle skiing, and snowboarding are examples where it isn’t the fastest athlete who wins, but the one who performs the best. Who earns the highest score? While I’m sure there is a clear methodology behind the judging, from the outside it can sometimes feel like the criteria is simply: Was that really impressive, or just somewhat impressive?
Report cards will be available in PowerSchool on February 24. While we don’t hand out medals — and students won’t receive a score of 136.17 in reading like in figure skating — teachers carefully consider many aspects of your child’s learning before determining a grade.
In CBE assessment language, grades are called indicators, typically ranging from 1–4. The CBE has created a helpful document explaining what each of these numbers means, and I encourage you to review it.
So how is that indicator number decided?
Teachers begin with the curriculum, which outlines what students are expected to know and be able to do at each grade level and in each subject area. From there, teachers gather evidence of learning through:
- Student work and creations
- Classroom conversations
- Daily observations
There is no secret formula, but there is thoughtful professional judgment. If you have any questions about your child’s report card or the indicator received, please reach out to their teacher. They are always happy to provide additional context and clarity.

Report Card Viewing
As noted above, report cards will be available through your MyCBE account starting February 24.
If you need support accessing your child’s report card, please contact the school or follow the provided link for a video tutorial.
Pink Shirt Day and Hot Chocolate Treat
Wednesday, February 25 is Pink Shirt Day.
While this day is widely recognized for anti-bullying awareness, at Sibylla Kiddle we frame it as a celebration of kindness — a reminder that everyone belongs.
It doesn’t matter if you wear:
- A pink shirt
- Green shoes
- A purple hat
You belong and deserve to be treated with kindness and respect at school and in our community.
Let’s work together to make pink a tidal wave of good toward others.
Buddy Class Celebration & Treat
Classes will gather with their buddy classes to celebrate kindness. Our School Council will be providing students with a special treat: hot chocolate.
The hot chocolate will be Tim Horton’s branded (powdered and/or prepared in-store).
If you have dietary concerns or do not wish your child to receive this drink, please contact your child’s teacher.
School Planning Engagement Opportunity
At our upcoming School Council meeting on March 5, we will provide a short presentation outlining the processes involved in school planning.
This session will include an opportunity for families to share input.
During this engagement, you will learn about:
- The School Development Plan
- The school budget
- School fees
We believe we make better decisions to support student learning when we build understanding and work together. We hope you will join us for this presentation and feedback session.
