Principal Update

Sibylla Kiddle School Families,

How are you doing on your New Year’s resolution? I’ve already hit mediocre status and we’re only a week in. My goal was to take more pictures of those I care about and the everyday moments of life that bring me joy. I realized that as much as I enjoy looking at these pictures, I don’t take enough of them. Thus far, I got some good pictures of the incredible frost that blanketed our city and a selfie with my family playing a board game. There is certainly still room for improvement.

Regardless of your thoughts on New Year’s resolutions, or your success rate, they serve as a valuable exercise in self-reflection. The ability to turn the metaphorical mirror onto ourselves, to look inside and consider what you desire to change, for the better. This is an exercise that not only helps us, as adults, but is also an important skill to develop as a child. Self-reflection enables children to develop their emotional intelligence, enhances their empathy for others, and helps them understand aspects of their own lives that they can control.

Teaching this skill can be relatively easy but it also takes intentionality. When your child makes a choice, are they able to articulate why? When they exhibited an undesirable behaviour, can they suggest how they could have approached the situation in a different way? Just like with our resolutions, we won’t necessarily be a new person tomorrow. Self-reflection won’t instantly result in noticeable change, but incremental growth will still be happening in the brain. That is the slow but wonderful process of learning at work.

PowerSchool Updates & Forms

We have noticed that a number of families have yet to complete various forms associated with your child’s PowerSchool account. Examples of forms that may be incomplete include media consent and opt-in consent (grade 4 & 5 human sexuality). Please take a moment to log into your MyCBE account to see if you have any forms to complete. Likewise, please double-check items like emergency contact information and current address as we seek to make sure we are maintaining accurate information.

Registration for the 2026-27 School Year

Registration for the 2026-27 school year opens on January 12, 2026. If your child is currently attending a CBE school, there is nothing for you to do. If you have a student who will be new to the CBE, this September, including Kindergarten, then you can go to the CBE registration webpage for information on how to proceed.

For families wishing to explore alternative programming options within the CBE, more information can be found Alternative Programs page.

For any families who currently do not live in Cranston, and in our designated attendance zone, please remember that in September 2026 you will need to be enrolled in your designated school. If you are unclear as to what school that is, please feel free to contact our front office and we would be happy to support you.

Program Offering – Mindful Moments

The YWCA offers a weekly program at our school called Mindful Moments. It is a mindfulness program for children aged 8-12 years old. The program is free and runs once a week, for 8 weeks, on Mondays after school. The program teaches children what mindfulness is, when to use mindfulness skills and new strategies to implement in daily routines. If you would like to register your child, please email MindfulMoments@ywcalgary.ca. The program begins on January 19 and registration will close at that time.

Personal Mobile Devices

Since the Winter Break, we have seen an increase in the number of Personal Mobile Devices (PMDs) that students have been bringing to school. This includes things such as cellphones and smartwatches. Ultimately, it means any device that can connect to the internet.

As per CBE regulations, these devices fall under the category of ‘Away for the Day’, meaning students should not have access to them during the school day. Students are strongly encouraged to leave these devices at home as the school cannot be responsible for their direct storage, care or security. For more information regarding this policy, please refer to the link above.

If there is a unique reason for your child to have a PMD at school, please be sure to consult with their teacher regarding your situation.
