Principal Update

Sibylla Kiddle School Families,

We are so excited to start the school year and meet your child. The first day of school can bring nerves. This is normal for everybody. Teachers often feel nervous the night before and don’t always get the best sleep. I get nervous going into the first day. As parent, I have no doubt many of you have some nerves and of course, our students feel nervous.

Nerves are normal and okay. They are simply our brain’s warning to us of something that is atypical. In this case, most of us are nervous because of uncertainty. From a student perspective, will people like me? Will I like my teacher? Will I be able to find my classroom after recess?

As a parent, you can help. Normalize the feeling by letting your child know that it is okay to feel nervous. Offer simple coping techniques, like breathing strategies or the power of a simple smile. Focus on past success, of when your child was able to do hard things. Model your own calm and confidence. Ask them to see if they can name the specific nerve.

Acknowledge that concern as valid and real. Brainstorm ways you could address it.

On that first day of school, some students will quickly wave goodbye to you in the morning. Others will feel a little teary and maybe a little extra cautious. That’s okay too. As a staff, we care deeply and we will make sure they are well taken care of. Our whole goal on day 1 is to have every student go home a little less nervous and a little more excited about the year ahead.

First Day Information

By now, you should have received an email from your child’s teacher, welcoming you to their classroom and explaining where students are to meet on the first day. If you have not received an email from your child’s teacher please bring your child to the office on the first day of school and we will help them find their assigned classroom.

If your child knows the teacher but isn’t sure where to go, they can ask for help from anyone wearing a bright safety vest and we will support them.

Busses will also be running that morning and we will also support those students in finding their appropriate teacher and classroom.

Traffic / Parking

Our school has close to 600 students. Not everyone is going to get the prime parking spots for drop off and pick up. Your convenience should not jeopardize the safety of someone else’s child. We will all need to be patient with the traffic flow by taking extra time, abiding by all traffic signs and modelling the importance of crossing the road at designated locations. Whenever possible, please walk to school. If you live too far, perhaps park a couple blocks away and try walking from there.

We have two big requests. Please do not drop-off, pick-up or park in the bus zone in front of our school. This zone is clearly designated. Secondly, please do not enter into the staff parking lot. This is simply not a safe or reasonable location for drop-off or pick-up.

Thank you for your support. Patience will be key. Each of our small but collective actions can and will make a difference.

Fees

Once school fees have been uploaded by the CBE, they will appear on your MyCBE Account. Generally, these fees are uploaded in late September or early October. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school office.

Supplies

Students will need to bring a pair of indoor shoes, a nut-free snack and a backpack to school. Students who are part of the lunch program will also need to bring a healthy lunch. All other consumable supplies (pencils, workbooks, crayons, etc.) are supplied by the school.

Lunchroom

All students may stay at school over the lunch break to eat their lunch and have an active living break. Once the system has been updated, you will be able to register and pay for the lunchroom program via your MyCBE account.

Please note, we are operating under the assumption that all students will be staying for lunch. If your child will be going home for lunch, please let the school know so we do not include them on our lunchroom attendance lists.

Busing

Information regarding your child’s bus route has been directly uploaded to your MyCBE account. If you have any concerns or questions regarding registration or routes, you can go to the main transportation website or email transportation@cbe.ab.ca.
