Principal’s Message

“Let’s make our circle strong.”

Saa’kokoto Randy Bottle, Kainai Elder

Today is National Indigenous Peoples’ Day. For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21 or around that time of year because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year. At Sibylla Kiddle, we honoured this day by furthering our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation through land-based learning. If you were at the school today, you might have had a hard time tracking down our students. Instead, they could be found visiting their class tree out on the school grounds, reflecting in sit spots, creating poetry at the statue park and walking along Cranston Ridge, as they engaged in learning with, from, about and on the land.

In recognition of this day, our school is also sharing our 2024-2025 Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. Through reflection our staff and students have shared the importance of land-based learning this year. It has allowed students to learn about the world around them in new ways. Students have expressed the calm that heading to our quiet surroundings brings them. Classes have found sanctuary in their sit spots. Sibylla Kiddle School will continue our journey learning with, from, about and on the land, while also committing to building relationships with one another and the land through building an understanding of the values of respect, reciprocity and sharing circles.

In recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day, and in alignment with the CBE Education Plan,  Sibylla Kiddle School  acknowledges and supports the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) Calls to Action, and makes the following commitment to action for the 2024-2025 school year:

Our stakeholders (staff, students and parents) will engage in teaching and learning opportunities with, from, about and on the land. This will include building and applying an understanding of Indigenous community values such as reciprocity and respect to explore how these are lived in relationships with Indigenous students, families, Elders, community members, and the land. We will also build on our understanding of Indigenous circle processes; incorporation talking circles to facilitate discussions with and amongst students, staff, and families. These actions will be further supported by the Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework and the Alberta Curriculum.

In making our commitment, Call to Action #62.2 offered inspiration.

Year End Treats

As we enter our final week of school, we would like to remind parents about not sending in food-based treats for students to share at school. Although we are grateful for the gesture, we must consider food allergies and other food preferences.

Medication at the Office

Please ensure you have collected your child’s medication from the office. Medication is not stored at the school over the summer. If you would like to arrange for your child to bring their medication home in their backpack, please contact the office.

Lost and Not-Yet Found

As we start to organize and clean up for the end of the year, we are encouraging families to check the lost and found. If your child is missing something (notably coats/hoodies), please encourage them to pick them up this week or stop by the school to look for missing items. Before or after school is a good time for parents to have a look through the “lost and not yet found” items. Unclaimed items will be packed and donated at the end of the day on June 27.
