Principal Update

Sibylla Kiddle School Families,

This past week, MP Tom Kmiec was a guest speaker for our grade 5 students. After speaking a little bit about his role, he opened the floor to questions from our students. The vast majority of the questions centered around the concept of voting. What happens if there is a tie? How does a vote decide the winner? Do you ever lose a vote?

As we know, voting is a key pillar of a parliamentary democracy. After the presentation, I pointed out to the students that the word vote and voice start with the same spelling but more importantly, they work together. Voting is a way of expressing our voice, having an opinion or a perspective.

While your child can’t vote, I’m confident they will use their voice. At school and at home, listening to and honoring student voice is important. At school, voice allows students to feel valued as important contributors within their learning. Likewise, at home children can begin to see their role in the family unit.

As in a democracy, that doesn’t always mean our vote/voice is actioned. That’s a hard lesson, even for us as adults. At school, we seek to use those opportunities for teaching multiple perspectives, as an opportunity to share resources and to collaborate with peers to find solutions for compromise. In your home, how might you foster the voice of your child while navigating respect, collaborative decision-making and overcoming disappointment when things don't go as desired?

Registration for the 2026-27 School Year

Registration for the 2026-27 school year opened on January 12, 2026. If your child is currently attending a CBE school, there is nothing for you to do. If you have a student who will be new to the CBE, this September, including Kindergarten, then you can go to the CBEregistration webpage for information on how to proceed.

For families wishing to explore alternative programming options within the CBE, more information can be found here.

For any families who currently do not live in Cranston, or in our designated attendance zone, please remember that in September 2026 you will need to be enrolled in your designated school. Likewise, based on previous communication from the CBE, if your child will be in grades 3 – 5, next year, and is from Copperfield, they can continue attending our school but transportation will not be available. All other Copperfield students must return to their designated school. If you are unclear as to what school that is, please feel free to contact our front office and we would be happy to support you.

Program Offering – Mindful Moments

The YWCA offers a weekly program at our school called Mindful Moments. It is a mindfulness program for children aged 8-12 years old. The program is free and runs once a week, for 8 weeks, on Mondays after school. The program teaches children what mindfulness is, when to use mindfulness skills and new strategies to implement in daily routines. If you would like to register your child, please email MindfulMoments@ywcalgary.ca. The program begins on January 26 (NEW date) and registration will close at that time.

PowerSchool Updates & Forms

We have noticed that a number of families have yet to complete various forms associated with your child’s PowerSchool account. Examples of forms that may be incomplete include media consent and opt-in consent (grade 4 & 5 human sexuality). Please take a moment to log into your MyCBE account to see if you have any forms to complete. Likewise, please double-check items like emergency contact information and current address as we seek to make sure we are maintaining accurate information.
