Sibylla Kiddle School Families,

Do you know how many countries are currently represented in the Winter Olympics? From Canada to Jamaica. Norway to Nigeria. Estonia to Brazil. Almost 2800 athletes are representing 92 countries. While the diversity in culture is significant, there is also unification in purpose – sporting excellence.

Do you know how many languages are spoken at Sibylla Kiddle School? From English to Romanian. Mandarin to Spanish. Mongolian to Urdu. Almost 600 students speak over 30 languages. While the diversity in language is significant, there is unification in our purpose – to learn.

The Olympics are anchored in a spirit of peace. For peace to exist, there must first be understanding, and understanding grows from a willingness to listen and to learn. February offers many opportunities to celebrate and learn from a variety of cultures, ethnicities, and faith traditions. Western culture sprinkles hearts everywhere for Valentine’s Day. Black History Month honours the accomplishments and contributions of Black communities. Lunar New Year is celebrated across many Asian cultures. The start of Ramadan marks a sacred month of fasting, reflection, generosity, and community for those observing the Islamic faith.

We often ask students, “What do you celebrate and recognize?” It is important to know your own roots and traditions. Another meaningful question to consider is, “What traditions, festivals, or celebrations do you want to learn more about?” In exploring that question together, your family might form a new friendship with a neighbour and discover connections that transcend cultural boundaries.

Alberta Education and Childcare Assurance (AECA) Survey (Grade 4)

Parents of Grade 4 students should have received the Alberta Education and Childcare Assurance (AECA) survey by email from Alberta Education. This survey is administered yearly to parents who have children in grades 4, 7 and 10. Your voice helps us understand your perceptions about teaching and learning at our school. It gives us valuable feedback for understanding those areas where we are doing well and those areas where we need to pay more attention. The survey is also important for giving feedback to Alberta Education in allowing them to shape the future of education in Alberta. Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey.
