Principal Update

Sibylla Kiddle School Families,

For those of you familiar with my historical Principal Updates, you likely have noticed a recurring theme; I like to share ideas for how learning can be embedded into fun activities. In other words, learning can be fun. So much fun that we don’t even realize we are learning. At the same time, we can also have fun while learning.

Next week, to keep spirits bright and to have a little fun, we are having a School Spirit week. Every day will have a different theme. Students can participate as much or as little as they would like. In some cases, teachers may use the theme of the day to act as a springboard for learning. In other cases, we will simply have fun while learning.

Obviously, our goal is to have a little fun but we are not asking families to go purchase special clothing. Encourage your child to be creative with what they have.

  • Monday | Cozy Sweater Day – Students can wear their favourite cozy or festive sweater.
  • Tuesday | Jersey Day – Students can wear the colours or paraphernalia of their favourite sports team.
  • Wednesday | Holiday Colours Day – Students can wear colours associated with holidays and traditions they may celebrate at this time of the year.
  • Thursday | Hat & Accessory Day – Students can wear fun hats and accessories to celebrate the season or just to express their own personality.
  • Friday | Pajama Day – Students can wear their comfy (but school appropriate) pajamas for the last day of school before the Winter Break.

We’re looking forward to both fun and learning before the Winter Break.

Staffing Updates

A couple weeks ago, we announced that Karolina Filarecka, our office Administrative Assistant, has taken on a new position with the CBE. We are now pleased to announce that Chandal McNaughton has accepted the vacant position of Administrative Assistant.

Chandal has been supporting the school in this role since this past spring. Previously, she held the roles of school secretary and lead lunchroom supervisor. These two positions are now vacant and we will be actively seeking to recruit new people into those positions in the coming weeks.

We also wanted to let our broader community know that Ms. Courtney, our music teacher, will be on a leave of absence due to a personal matter. We are pleased to announce that Ms. Kristen McMullen will be stepping into this role, on an interim basis, starting in January. Ms. McMullen has supported the music program in our school on previous occasions and she knows many of our students.

Mustard Seed – Thank you

Thank you to those of you who were able to contribute to the Mustard Seed Basic Essentials fundraiser we did over the past couple of weeks. Well over 1000 items were collected which will in turn serve to support vulnerable individuals in our city. Thank you!

Book Fair – Thank you

Our Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success! Through the sale of books, we will be able to purchase almost $5000 worth of new books for our school and classroom libraries.

Thank you as well to our dedicated volunteers for your time and efforts in helping with sales and processing orders. A final thank you to our Library Assistant, Mrs. Williams who has spent hours taking care of all the logistical responsibilities that go into planning and reconciling this event.

Winter Weather Outdoor Guidelines

In alignment with CBE guidelines, we will continue to take our breaks outdoors as long as the temperature is warmer than -20̊C, with or without the wind chill. This means students should come prepared to be outside everyday as bitter cold morning temperatures can warm up during the day. We are already opening school doors 10 minutes before school begins. This practice will continue, regardless of the weather, so that students have a warm building to be in on inclement days. Should the temperature be -20̊C or colder, we will be doing indoor activities and the doors in the morning will open at 7:45 AM.
