Dear Sibylla Kiddle families,
We have already begun to implement many of the suggestions from our belonging survey and will continue this work throughout the year: we are starting Leadership Club with Grade 5 students, we completed a collaborative learning piece as a whole school for Orange Shirt Day, we came together for the Terry Fox assembly and will do the same for Orange Shirt Day. We are currently planning physical education and fine arts residencies, scheduling winter and spring sports days, and developing whole-school events like winter and spring concerts and Lunch with a Loved One. It is our commitment to you that we will continue to prioritize whole-school belonging throughout the year, and ask for student, staff, and family voices throughout that process.
Please note that students with annual external clearance may have their picture (including their face), their work, and their first name posted on our Instagram. Please see the annual authorization forms on MyCBE/SchoolEngage if you have any questions about clearance. We encourage families to follow our school’s Instagram to see teaching and learning in action!
Google Classrooms
All of our teachers have on online presence through their Google Classroom. The classroom has many uses: students and families can access key learning sites and resources, older students use it to submit assignments, and it becomes another communication tool between home and school. Students are learning how to access Google Classroom at school. To visit the Google Classroom from home, visit the steps outlined here.
Lockdown Drill & Outdoor Lights/Voice
We had our first lockdown of the year yesterday and it went very smoothly. Calgary Police Service members were on hand and praised how respectful and quiet the students were. CPS members are skilled at debriefing the experience with each class after the lockdown; CPS ensures students understand that the drill is serious, yet they do that in age-appropriate ways so as not to cause concern. We will have another practice lockdown in the spring.
Families, if you ever see the blue lights flashing outside our school and hear “Lockdown, lockdown, lockdown” on the outdoor speakers, please do not attempt to enter the school. Students are taught the same thing if a lockdown was to happen while they are outside of the building.
Reminder: Orange Shirt Day
We will recognize Orange Shirt Day at Sibylla Kiddle on Tuesday, September 29. Wearing orange on Orange Shirt Day honours survivors of Residential Schools, remembers the children who never returned home, and acknowledges the lasting impacts of Residential Schools on families and communities. The orange shirt is a symbol of the culture, language, identity, and freedom that were taken from Indigenous children, and a reminder that Every Child Matters. We encourage all students to wear orange on September 29.
