Dear Sibylla Kiddle families,
We had 126 people respond to our whole-school belonging survey – wow! Thank you so much for sharing your views and having a voice in school decision-making. There are so many wonderful suggestions – the challenge now will be to decide which ones we will act on this year and which ones we save for future years. We will unpack the data as a staff and share our next steps in the upcoming weeks – stay tuned!
Please note that students with annual external clearance may have their picture (including their face), their work, and their first name posted on our Instagram. Please see the annual authorization forms on MyCBE/SchoolEngage if you have any questions about clearance. We encourage families to follow our school’s Instagram to see teaching and learning in action!
Modular Classrooms
As Brad Emery shared last year, our school is receiving six modular classrooms that will be installed onto the north end of the school. The construction for these portables is scheduled to begin in October, with an estimated completion date of February. Since 2019, the CBE has welcomed close to 20 000 new students to our schools. The portables play a role in ensuring there is enough space for all students to learn in schools close to their homes. We will keep you posted on the construction of the portables as we receive updates. You can read more about the use of modular classrooms in the CBE here
Lockdown Drill Next Week
We will have our first lockdown drill of the year next week. Teachers will explain the importance of lockdowns and practice them with their students, so they understand and feel comfortable with the drill. All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan.
Orange Shirt Day
We will recognize Orange Shirt Day at Sibylla Kiddle on Tuesday, September 29. Wearing orange on Orange Shirt Day honours survivors of Residential Schools, remembers the children who never returned home, and acknowledges the lasting impacts of Residential Schools on families and communities. The orange shirt is a symbol of the culture, language, identity, and freedom that were taken from Indigenous children, and a reminder that Every Child Matters. We encourage all students to wear orange on September 29.
Reminder: Terry Fox Run & Toonies for Terry: Monday, September 21
Our annual Terry Fox Run will take place on September 21 from 1:00 – 2:00, weather permitting. Leading up to this day, students will have opportunities to learn about Terry Fox, his incredible journey, and why we continue to run in his honour. Students will begin the afternoon with a short assembly before heading outside for the run.
We encourage all students to bring a "Toonie for Terry" on the day of the run, to benefit the Terry Fox Foundation. Our school goal is to raise at least $750. If families would like to donate more, you can send your child with more money or donate directly to the Terry Fox Foundation using our school's fundraising link: Terry Fox Foundation – SKS School Fundraising Page

Reminder: Meet the Teacher: Thursday, September 24
We welcome all families to come out to our Meet the Teacher night on Thursday, September 24, from 5:00-6:30 PM. Meet the Teacher is a student-directed evening, with students touring their family around the school and introducing families and teachers. Meet the Teacher is not a time to talk about individual student progress – those conversations will take place in November at school conferences.
