Sibylla Kiddle School Families,
What does the perfect birthday look like to you? Likely, there are some differences and some overlap in your response when compared to your child’s response to that question. For me, I have the privilege of having a summer birthday. This lends itself perfectly to a BBQ with family, maybe a walk in the forest and a good board game to cap off the day. Of course, there needs to be some kind of sugary treat; a slice of cake with ice cream will do just fine.
Sibylla Kiddle was born on May 25, 1919. At our school, we have a tradition in which we celebrate her birthday. Sibylla Kiddle embodied the spirit of community through acts of generosity by giving of her time and resources to others. We seek to honor her legacy by giving back to our community.
While celebrating a birthday with all the trimmings is accessible for many of our families, that isn’t the case for all families. The Calgary Food Bank has an amazing initiative where they put together Birthday Party Kits for families where this may be a challenge. As a school, we want to support this work by collecting birthday party items to donate to the food bank. During the week of May 19 – 22, we are collecting dry cake mixes, prepackaged frosting/icing, gift bags and party supplies such as balloons, banners and candles. If you are able to contribute in some way, we would appreciate it. Please note, we are NOT collecting gifts or toys, just party-based supplies.
Finally, celebrating a birthday should come with a treat. Therefore, we have arranged to have a cookie for each student on May 25. If you have dietary/allergy concerns, please connect with your child’s teacher so we can arrange an alternative treat.

Next Year Class Planning Considerations
As we prepare for the year ahead, we are entering the early stages of planning our classroom configurations for 2026-2027. If there are specific learning considerations we should be aware of when creating class lists, we would appreciate your input.
Requests for specific teachers should not be made, as staffing assignments can change significantly from year to year, including which teachers are at our school and the grade levels they are assigned to teach.
We also work intentionally to ensure students are placed with peers with whom they have positive social connections. Requests regarding specific student placements cannot always be accommodated. In some situations, requests may conflict with those of another family, while in other cases, observed learning dynamics may suggest certain pairings are not the most effective learning match.
If you would like to share information for us to consider, please put your thoughts in writing and email them to sibyllakiddle@cbe.ab.ca no later than May 25, 2026. While no guarantees can be made, please know that significant time and care are put into creating balanced classroom configurations that best support the learning needs of all students.
If you already know that your child will not be attending Sibylla Kiddle School for the 2026-2027 school year, please contact the school office as soon as possible so that our projected enrolment records remain accurate.
Personal Mobile Devices
We continue to see a considerable number of students with personal mobile devices at school. In particular, we are noticing many smart watches. CBE regulations, in accordance and alignment with provincial legislation, require all smart devices (phones, watches or anything else that be connected to the internet or with Bluetooth) to be put away at school. This means students should not be wearing smart watches, even when set to do not disturb modes. Thank you for your support and understanding in this matter. For more information, please visit our school website.
Footwear – Physical Education
As we start engaging in outdoor Physical Education activities, we would like to remind families of the importance of appropriate footwear for safety, comfort, and active participation. Students are encouraged to wear closed-toe running or athletic shoes with good grip and support, suitable for running, games, and outdoor movement activities. Proper footwear helps reduce the risk of slips, falls, and injuries while allowing students to fully participate in Physical Education classes. Thank you for your support in helping students come prepared and ready to participate safely each day.
Sunscreen
As you know, the weather is starting to improve and warmer days are near. This is the time of year when we see an increase in sunscreen at school. This is great, as students are protecting their skin. Please note, if students are using a spray, they should be applying it outside. Our staff is unable to apply lotion or sprays; students will need to put it on themselves.
