Principal's Message

Dear Sibylla Kiddle Families,

Our school is going to look quite different starting next week when our portable construction begins.  The six new classrooms will installed over the next five months or so.  Please read the update below for important information and changes that begin on Monday.

Important Construction Update – Changes to Doors

Construction begins Monday on our new modular classrooms. The fences were delivered today instead of Monday, hence our surprise and last minute email.  The anticipated completion date for the portables is the end of March.  We will be having six classrooms installed – at times, traffic around the school will be impacted by deliveries and construction vehicles.  We ask for your ongoing patience as this project is completed.

The construction process means that the back (north) part of the school will not be accessible, as construction fencing will remain up the entire time.  There will also be less parking in the cul-de-sac on the northeast side of the school, as contractors and trades will be parking there. The majority of disruptive work will be done outside of school hours; however, families accessing First Class will notice increased traffic in the evenings.

Due to the closure of the north door, student access doors will change beginning on Monday:

Grades 1 & 3 will enter and exit through the front door.

Grades 2 & 4 will enter and exit through the compound door.

These changes will last as long as the construction.

Bus Attendance

If your child is not riding the bus home from school, and they normally do, we ask that parents call the office by 2:00 to inform the school.  We do bus attendance each afternoon and have daily delays waiting to confirm if a student should be on the bus.  Please help us ensure the safety and efficiency of the busses at the end of the day.

Jaywalking

Safety is a top priority during the school day, and we are asking for help in ensuring pick-up and drop-off times are safe as well.  Parents have been jaywalking to their cars, at times going between parked school buses.  We have a clear crosswalk with flashing lights and ask that parents use that marked crosswalk.  Please help model safe road traffic behavior for all students.

Leadership Fundraiser:  Guess the Number of Items in the Jar

Leadership Club students have chosen Animals in Need as their charity focus for the year.  This year, we are supporting the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF).

Our first fundraiser will be a "Guess the Number of Items in the Jar".  We will have two jars filled with random items.  From November 16-19, students can pay $1 per guess to guess the number of items in the jar.  The winner of each jar will receive a fidget prize pack.  More information will be shared on Instagram, including some images of the jars so families can help our youngest students with their guesses.  If there are ties, the fidget prize packs will be divided amongst the winners.

Leadership Club students designed this fundraiser on their own and we are excited to see their plan come to life!

Babysitting at Council & Earlier Council Times

Our first Council meeting with babysitting was a success!  Our Leadership Club students LOVED helping out, and the kids were well-supported and entertained.

To encourage more families to come to Council (while taking advantage of free babysitting!), we will start the January Council meeting a half an hour earlier – at 6:00.  We hope the earlier start time will not interfere with bedtime as much.  We hope to see you there!

Remembrance Day Assemblies — November 10

We will recognize Remembrance Day on Tuesday, November 10, with two assemblies to accommodate our youngest students.

Families are welcome to attend.

Kindergarten and Grade 1 Assembly

Time: 9:30 AM
Doors Open: 9:15 AM

This shorter assembly is designed for our youngest students and will include:

  • An explanation of why we observe Remembrance Day.
  • A performance by Grade 4/5 students.
  • A wreath-laying ceremony.
  • Reflections shared by Grade 1 students.
  • A moment of silence.

Grades 2–5 Assembly

Time: 10:30 AM
Doors Open: 10:15 AM

This assembly will include all elements of the earlier ceremony, along with a special guest presentation.

We are pleased to welcome veteran John MacCormack to our school for this important occasion.

Students who participate in Girl Guides or Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms on this day.

Poppy Donations — November 10

We will be providing every student with a poppy prior to the assembly, thanks to our local legion.  We encourage all students to bring a monetary donation for their poppy on that day.  Leadership Club students will come around and collect the funds.  Thank you in advance!

Please remember that the staff parking lot is strictly reserved for staff members at all times, and please prioritize safety over convenience. We ask that you park legally on adjacent streets and walk your child the remaining distance. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school community safe!

Reminder: Ongoing Council Fundraisers:  Growing Smiles & Purdy's

Did you know that school funding essentially covers only staff and some supplies, like photocopying paper?  All other "extras" in the school are paid for through School Council and the Parent Fundraising Society.  This month alone, Council has paid for:

  • Buses for field trips
  • A Sound Kreations residency
  • Classroom enrichment supplies, like sit spot mats and art supplies
  • Gym equipment

You can help our Council help us by supporting their fundraising efforts.  They currently have two fundraising drives:  Growing Smiles and Purdy's Chocolate.  Orders are due November 10 and pick up will be November 26.  Check out the SKS Council and Fundraising Society on Instagram for more information.
