“A winter walk with a loved one can warm the heart,

even as it chills the toes.”

Recently, I have learned about a new winter activity called crokicurl. An adaptation of the board game crokinole, crokicurl, is played on ice using small curling type rocks that are slid toward the center of a large target with each team trying to get closest to the center. The game was invented in Winnipeg and has now spread across the country.

Next Thursday is Winter Walk Day, a provincial initiative to encourage Albertan’s to be active outdoors in winter. We know that getting fresh air and being out in nature, even during the chilly times, provides us with many benefits such as reducing stressing, clearing our minds, and helping us sleep better. With the weather recently getting warmer, it is a wonderful time to get outside to walk, ski, skate or run!

Next week, we are encouraging families walk to school on Winter Walk Day. Even if you have a further drive, try parking a short distance away from the school and walking the last little bit of the journey. Not only can this start the day off in a positive and active way, but it also supports our school with traffic congestion around the school.

Throughout the week, talk with your own family about ways that you can be more active in the outdoors this winter. Maybe, you will find a new, fun activity like crokicurl that you can enjoy together!
