"We gather to solve problems we can’t solve on our own. We gather to celebrate, to mourn, and to mark transitions. We gather to make decisions. We gather because we need one another. We gather to show strength. We gather to honor and acknowledge. We gather to build companies and schools and neighbourhoods. We gather to welcome, and we gather to say goodbye.”

(Priya Parker, The Art of Gathering)

I have recently started reading the book “The Art of Gathering” by Priya Parker. In the book she shares the importance of gathering, emphasizing why we meet and why it matters to us in our communities. Gathering, she says, needs to have a clear purpose so that we can create something memorable and meaningful.

In schools, gathering is a frequent occurrence. Students gather at the carpet to listen to an engaging story, gather at Cranston Ridge to reflect and observe, gather in the Learning Commons to choose a terrific book and gather with their friends at recess to play games. Our staff also spends time gathering, working together to create meaningful and authentic learning opportunities for our students.

This week, we also had the opportunity to gather for the first time as a whole school community to take part in our annual Terry Fox Run. Speaking with the students, I shared my joy to see our collective together in one space. Gathering in this way allows our community to continue to build a sense of belonging and to recognize that together we can accomplish remarkable things.

This weekend, many of us will gather in some way or another with our family and friends. We might be heading out to the mountains to take in the fall scenes, enjoying a delicious feast, attempting one last weekend of camping, or travelling to be with one another. Whichever way you are gathering, we hope that you create something meaningful and memorable with your family and friends.

Sincerely,

Lisa Patten
