“Literacy is critical in helping us make sense of our world. From the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep, we are constantly making meaning of the world around us.”

January 20-27 is Family Literacy Week, which culminates with Family Literacy Day on January 27. This day is intended to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in literacy activities as a family. So, what is family literacy? Family literacy focuses on all family members spending regular time together engaging in fun and meaningful literacy activities to practice, build and improve children’s literacy skills.
There are many ways for families to spend time interacting with literacy. Plan a special story time, tell some jokes at the dinner table, play a favourite game, or follow a new recipe. Literacy takes many forms, and the possibilities are endless, so make it fun by doing it all together. The Calgary Board of Education has put together some resources and suggestions for literacy activities that families can take part in over the week. You can find the resource list here. We are inviting sharing of daily learning and celebrations using #WeAreCBE #CBELiteracy.
What is your family going to do on Family Literacy Day to celebrate all things written and read?
Sincerely,
